Jazz Artists Guild - Newport Rebels

The one positive accomplishment of the 1960 Newport Festival was the creation in rebellion of a musicians' festival at Cliff Walk Manor. Organised by charlie Mingus and Max Roach in protest against the accelerating commercialization of the annual production at Freebody Park.

On returning to New York, most of the rebels formed the Jazz Artists Guild, and intended to produce more concerts as well as recordings. One result was this album. Despite the fact that these sessions were held in a studio, the music reflected the high-spirited freedom of the best jazz played at the original setting because nearly all of it was improvised during the recording.

Artist on this disc include Abbey Lincoln (vocal), Benny Bailey (trumpet), Booker Little (trumpet), Charles Mingus (bass), Eric Dolphy (alto saxophone), Jimmy Knepper (trombone), Jo Jones (drums), Julian Priester (trombone), Kenny Dorham (piano), Peck Morrison (bass), Roy Eldrige (trumpet), Tommy Flanagan (piano) and Walter Benton (tenor saxophone).

The Newport rebellion is over, but its crackling spirit was caught alive here.
